Apps signed with a free Apple Developer account expire after 7 days. SideStore can automatically refresh them so you don't lose access. Here's how to set up and use refresh.
Why Do Apps Need Refreshing?
When you sideload apps with a free Apple Developer account, Apple limits the certificate validity to 7 days. After that, apps stop working until they're refreshed (re-signed). SideStore handles this automatically so you don't have to manually reinstall apps every week.
Automatic Refresh Methods
Open SideStore
The simplest method: just open SideStore on your device about once a week. SideStore will refresh all your apps automatically when you launch it.
No computer needed. Works anywhere.
Background Refresh
If configured, SideStore can refresh apps in the background using Wi-Fi or internet connection. Check SideStore settings for background refresh options.
Requires initial setup with pairing.
Manual Refresh
If automatic refresh isn't working, you can manually refresh by opening SideStore and tapping the refresh button, or use iLoader to reinstall apps.
Fallback method when needed.
Step-by-Step: Refresh Your Apps
- Open SideStore on your iPhone or iPad.
- If refresh is needed, SideStore will show a notification or refresh button.
- Tap Refresh All or let SideStore refresh automatically.
- Wait for the refresh to complete (usually takes 30-60 seconds).
- Your apps should now work for another 7 days.
Troubleshooting Refresh Issues
- Apps still expired — Make sure SideStore has internet access and your Apple ID credentials are still valid. Try manually refreshing in SideStore.
- Refresh fails — Check your internet connection. If using Wi-Fi refresh, ensure your device and computer are on the same network.
- Certificate revoked — You may have hit the limit of 3 certificates per Apple ID. See our Fix Revoked Certificate guide.
- SideStore won't open — SideStore itself may need refreshing. Use iLoader to reinstall SideStore.
Best Practices
- Open SideStore weekly — Set a reminder to open SideStore once a week to keep apps refreshed.
- Keep internet connected — SideStore needs internet to refresh certificates.
- Don't wait until expiration — Refresh apps a day or two before they expire to avoid downtime.
- Monitor certificate count — With a free account, you're limited to 3 certificates. Use iLoader to manage and revoke old certificates.
Paid vs Free Account
With a free Apple Developer account, apps expire every 7 days and need refreshing. With a paid Apple Developer Program membership ($99/year), apps can last up to one year without refreshing.
For most users, the free account with weekly refresh is sufficient. See our Free Apple Developer Account Guide for more details.
